Transmissions were designed to work for quite some time before needing to be replaced. However, they do require a certain amount of maintenance and care to keep them working properly. And as you put more miles on your vehicle, the chance of failure is going to increase more and more. Once you know what it is that you are looking for, you can figure out what might be going on with your transmission and determine if you need to have your existing one replaced or repaired. Here are a few things you need to be on the lookout for signaling something isn't right with your transmission.
The check engine light recently came on.
Whenever something in your vehicle starts acting up, it will send error codes through the computer system signaling that something needs to be checked out. If you notice a light on your dashboard, you need to take your vehicle in to a licensed mechanic for them to look at it for you. There are far too many sensors and intricate components to let your vehicle go unattended to. A transmission specialist will be able to perform an accurate diagnosis for you and tell you exactly what needs to be done and how much it is going to cost you.
Your vehicle is making a whining sound.
Whenever you head out on the open road, your vehicle is putting stress and strain on the transmission. While your vehicle should normally be pretty quiet, a whining noise often indicates that something is going on beneath the surface. It might be something as simple as low oil or something more involved like a bad bearing or failing gear. Whatever the cause, you need to have the vehicle looked at and thoroughly examined before it ends up turning into something far worse.
Your vehicle is leaking oil.
There are a number of different oils inside of your vehicle. From engine oil to transmission fluid and more, each one of these oils have their own distinct purpose. If you notice a puddle of fluid underneath of your vehicle, you can typically identify it by looking at the color of the oil. Transmission fluid is a red color. If that's what you found under your ride, you need to get it looked at right away because something is going on that has to be fixed.
