The transmission only ranks second to the engine when it comes to primary components in a vehicle and with transmission problems, whether your car runs well or not, you'll just be setting still. Even though finding out that you have a bad transmission is a scary fact to face, you can keep your car as long as you have the money to make a few investments in a rebuilt or re-manufactured transmission.
How much does it cost to have a transmission rebuilt?
A transmission rebuild can vary when it comes to cost because transmissions can be so different between one to the next and it is often at the mechanics discretion as to how much they charge. In general terms, you can expect a complete transmission rebuild to cost $3,000 to $4,000. This may sound steep, but well worth the investment if the rest of your car is in sound condition and runs well.
Is a rebuilt transmission as good as a new one?
During a transmission rebuild, the inner working components are dissected, removed, and replaced as needed. A few examples of what a rebuilt transmission will get new include:
- gears
- clutch plates
- shifting bands
- gaskets and rubber seals
- transmission filter
- bushings, nuts, and washers
The extent of a rebuild can vary depending on who you have perform the work and what is needed, but in just about every case, a rebuilt transmission basically means the interior of the unit is replaced with new, fully functional parts. Therefore, what you have at the end of a complete rebuild is almost as good as a new transmission, the main difference being that the exterior housing remains in tact.
Will having a rebuilt transmission in your car bring down its overall resale value?
In most cases, no. As long as you have the transmission rebuilt by a certified transmission mechanic and hang on to your documentation to prove that the transmission was rebuilt. In fact, a good mechanic will usually offer a warranty on the parts used and labor performed during the rebuild. Some sellers may even see a rebuilt transmission as a good thing because they can rest easy knowing that it is not very likely that transmission problems will be an issue for quite some time.
