Easy Transmission Repair Tips

Posted on: 18 April 2016

The transmission is one of the most important parts of your car. It can cause a ton of damage should it break down. Here are some transmission problems that you should be able to detect and repair on your own without a ton of effort.

1. Overheating as a Result of Low Fluid Levels

If you notice that your engine is overheating or beginning to overheat in conditions that it would not normally do so, chances are good that you have low fluid levels. You can resolve this problem by simply checking your fluid levels by using the dipstick. If you find that the fluid levels are low even though you just refilled them, then there's a good chance that you have a fast leak that was caused by a puncture in the side of the fluid container. You will need to replace the fluid container in its entirety.

If you haven't checked your transmission fluid levels in awhile, you might not be sure if it is a fast leak or a slow leak. You can often figure it out by looking at places where you park your car. If there are red stains on the ground, then there is a good chance that you have had a slow leak over an extended period of time. You can find the source of the leak by spraying the outside of your transmission fluid container with soapy water. From there, you can look for where bubbles are being disrupted. Then, you can use electrical tape to temporarily patch the hole.

2. Your Fuel is No Longer Lubricating Correctly

If your transmission feels clunkier than usual, this is likely a sign that your fuel is no longer lubricating correctly and that it is therefore used up. You can verify your suspicions by taking a fuel sample and checking to see if it is a darker color than it was originally or if it smells or looks burnt. To fix this, all you have to do is replace all of your transmission fluids.

3. Your Transmission is Slipping

There are many different reasons for a slipping transmission but one of the most common ones is that there is not enough fuel. You can remedy this by adding more transmission fuel to its container.
