Protect Your Truck's Windshield From Damage Associated With Inclement Weather

Posted on: 17 May 2016

If a hailstorm caused damage to your truck's windshield, resulting in the need for a new piece of glass, protect the replacement windshield with the following tips. As a result, you will not need to worry too much about damage occurring when inclement weather is predicted.

Cover The Windshield When It Is Going To Be Exposed

Purchase a cover that is designed to be slip-proof and place it on your truck's windshield whenever your vehicle will be parked in an open area that does not contain any protection from rain, hail, or ice. Many covers are weighted or have an adhesive material attached to each side that will help secure one to your vehicle. For additional protection, park your vehicle inside a garage at night or underneath an awning or carport.

Whenever traveling long distances and planning to park your vehicle for the night before heading to a hotel, locate a parking garage to store your vehicle inside of so that you do not need to worry about unforeseen damages if the weather conditions change to dangerous ones while you are sleeping.

Use A De-Icing Agent And Water Repellent

Pack a windshield de-icer and plastic scraper in your truck's trunk. Apply the product to your windshield if it is exposed to an ice or hail. Do not turn your windshield wipers on until after you have melted or scraped ice from the glass. If the wipers are turned on before all of the ice has melted, the wipers may press pieces of ice firmly against the glass and cause visible damage, which will be difficult or impossible to eliminate.

For added protection, clean your truck's windshield and apply a water repellent to the glass with a lint-free cloth. Once the repellent dries, rain or ice will roll down your truck's windshield instead of remaining on the glass if you begin moving down the road during a storm.

Protect The Wiper Blades

If you accidentally forget to bring a windshield cover along with you while traveling, cover the wiper blades with long socks. The fabric will prevent the blades from coming into contact with debris that could scratch the glass. After a storm has passed, you can clean the windshield with standard glass cleaner and quickly get on the road. The windshield wipers can be used if you encounter rain, snow, or hail and the blades will move smoothly over the glass the proper way.

By using all of the tips on a regular basis, your truck's auto replacement windshield will remain damage-free and you won't need to worry about your vision being obstructed while driving, due to scratches in the glass.
