Three Signs You Need To Repair Your Car's Exhaust System
Posted on: 16 October 2018
The exhaust system within your vehicle is one of the most important parts of your car, as it is directly connected to your engine. As its name would suggest, the exhaust system removes gases that are produced when fuel is burned. Any sort of blockage, leak or any other type of mechanical issue with your exhaust system can then quickly cause complications for your engine, and by extension, the rest of your vehicle. Being able to identify exhaust issues early can help you prevent further problems from developing.
Odd Sounds
One of the clearest signs that your exhaust system may be in need of repair or replacement is if you find that there is more noise coming out of the tailpipe than usual, especially if the noise levels are extremely high when traveling at low speeds or idling. This can represent a damaged muffler, rust or corrosion within the exhaust pipes, and in the case that the sound is a rattling or ticking one, damaged supports that may cause parts of your exhaust system to fall off the car with continued wear. You may also be able to feel such vibrations through the gas pedal or steering wheel, depending on the severity of the problem.
Smells within the Vehicle
Another fairly obvious and serious sign of issues with your exhaust system is the presence of an exhaust odor within the cabin of your vehicle. This can point to an exhaust leak, which can happen because of rust or other forms of physical damage to your exhaust system, but is a serious health hazard beyond affecting the performance of your vehicle as inhaling these gases can be toxic. Avoid driving your vehicle at all, and get in touch with a mechanic and towing company to safely have your vehicle inspected.
Reduced Efficiency
A subtler sign of an exhaust system that is not operating very efficiently is if you find that your vehicle's fuel efficiency has decreased dramatically recently. An exhaust system that is unable to properly vent gases away from your engine can cause it to operate at higher temperatures and burn fuel less efficiently, driving up fuel consumption and forcing you to go to the pump at a faster rate. This makes taking your vehicle into a mechanic a sound financial decision, as the cost of a repair will likely cost much less than the continued cost of filling up the gas tank over time.
