3 Signs Your Vehicle Has A Transmission Problem

Posted on: 5 January 2022

Your transmission is responsible for shifting the gears on your vehicle. If the transmission is going bad, there are going to be signs to tell you. If it is going bad, eventually you won't be able to drive anywhere, as it won't shift gears for your vehicle to go anywhere. Your transmission would either need to be repaired or replaced altogether. A transmission replacement can be costly, so you want to catch an issue with your transmission ahead of time. Read on for some signs that you have a transmission problem.

1. Slipping Gears

One of the major signs of a transmission issue is slipping gears. This may feel like your vehicle is not moving into the next gear, or it may go down a gear while you are attempting to accelerate. It may also feel like your vehicle doesn't want to accelerate at all if you have a transmission problem. If you think your gears are slipping, you shouldn't be on the road driving the vehicle at all, and you should take it immediately to a transmission repair shop so you don't wind up in an accident while out on the road.

2. Leaking Transmission Fluid

If you have transmission fluid beneath your vehicle after it has been parked, it's a problem you need to have looked into. The fluid will be a red color and have a sweet odor to it. If you think it may be transmission fluid, you can check it yourself to see if it's low, or you don't have any at all, you should take your vehicle to a transmission repair shop to be repaired by a professional mechanic.

3. Not Shifting Into Drive

If you aren't even able to shift your vehicle from park to drive, as in your gear shifter will not move into the proper gear, or you aren't able to get your vehicle to move, it's probably a transmission issue and you should have your vehicle repaired immediately. Your vehicle will more than likely need to be towed to the transmission repair shop in this case. Even if you can eventually move it into drive, you shouldn't attempt to drive it.

If you notice any of these issues with your vehicle, you should take your vehicle in for an inspection and to have your transmission repaired or replaced as required. Don't attempt to drive your vehicle if you suspect it is a transmission issue. Talk to a mechanic to learn more about transmission repairs
